Week 9 Sports Tipping Round-Up
Week 9 turned into one of the strongest scoring rounds of the competition so far, with every tipster getting at least five correct. At this stage of the competition, that is a pretty solid effort across the board.
There were a few banker results, with the Hurricanes, Warriors and New Zealand all being picked by 100% of players, and all three getting the job done. Collingwood were also well backed, with 81% of tipsters taking them, while the Otago Nuggets rewarded 70% of the field.
The Southern Steel result was the real curveball of the round. Only six tipsters backed them, and that was understandable. They were away from home against the Mystics, a side they had struggled to beat in recent seasons. But Steel turned that form line on its head with a huge second-half performance, winning 57–46 and giving the few who picked them a valuable point that most of the field missed.
Wellington also caused a bit of movement, with only 41% of the field picking them. Those lower-picked results are the ones that start to matter now, especially with the leaderboard getting tighter.
The English Premier League match was played on Monday, ahead of the weekend round, so everyone was awarded a point for that game. That helped lift the scoring, but even with that included, the overall results were strong.
The scoring table tells the story. Nobody scored below five, with seven players finishing on five, twelve players landing six, five players scoring seven, and three players going all the way through to eight from eight. With the two bonus points added for a perfect round, Kosta, Mac and Leo finished as the top scorers for the week with 10 points each.
At the top of the leaderboard, Mike G remains in front on 53, with Bobby close behind on 51. HiDeHi, Taniwha and Gumboot are sitting together on 48, so there is still plenty of pressure on the leaders.
At the other end, Zac remains on 34 as the lowest score for the competition, but with the scoring so strong this week, there was no major damage done across the field.
With the competition now getting to the pointy end, we have made this week’s picks a bit tougher. There are a few games in there that should split the room, and that is exactly what we need at this stage. The easy rounds are nice, but the harder ones are where the leaderboard can really move.
